Yesterday, it was required.

<span style='font-size:10.0pt; At 5.30pm we received a call that the area around the bomb was being evacuated, and the emergency plan was being launched. Within minutes, members of the public who had been hurried out of their homes and businesses were arriving at The Pavilions. This included all the guests and staff of the Holiday Inn.

<span style='font-size:10.0pt; By 6.30pm, around 300 residents of all ages were being looked after by our staff (who had either stayed on, or had come in at literally a moments notice), by the emergency services, social services, St Johns Ambulance, and even a holidaying Reverend.

The bomb was eventually made safe and was ready to be moved by 10pm. Unfortunately the route it needed to take went right past the Pavilions, so one final set of precise planning was required to ensure everyone within the building was safe should the bomb explode while passing us!

<span style='font-size:10.0pt; However, I'm so proud to have witnessed the evening be handled in a first class manner. I cannot praise enough every single member of staff involved, who all played their own important part in the events. Some worked a 14 hour day. Others came in at a drop of a hat. All went beyond the call of duty, which was just what was required.
He has pneumonia, and was ordered by his doctor this morning not to go ahead with this weeks commitments. If you know anyone who was due to be coming, please let them know.

Hopefully though we've also managed to get the message out to them. On average, we only cancel or postpone 1 or 2 shows a year, and the alst time it happened so close to the event was around 3 years ago. Thankfully though, we're pretty good at having procedures in place for things like this, and our team knew exactly what had to be done today.

The first I heard about it was an email from his Promoter at around 2pm this afternoon. She was contacting us, and the other venues affected. We immediately took the show "off sale", which means we stopped selling tickets, but at that point didn't give any indications as to why. Before we communicate that the show isn't happening, we want to also communicate what IS happening instead.

Both myself and the Promoter were keen to rearrange the show for a new date, and that process, which invloved not just us, but also the other venues, was finished by 4.45pm. We had a new date of February 3rd next year.

In the meantime, our Marketing team had drafted the Press Release, plus an email and posted letter, both of which would go out to everyone that had bought a ticket, to be doubly sure that they heard, and don't turn up on Wednesday.

At 4.45 I was able to say to the team "It's February 3rd, go for it". The date was inserted into the documents, and our printer started printing the letters. Throughout the afternoon they had also already printed all the envelopes and run them through the franking machine.

All available hands were on deck to fold the letters and stuff the envelopes.
I mentioned how we'd strenghtened the stage to take the weight of the trains, which are over a tonne each.

First the good news. Our sums were right. Where we had bolstered the strength, it held up.

Now the not so good news, which I received at half five on Friday night. During the tour (as happens with most tours while they are on the road), the show had been refined and improved. As part of that, Thomas was now using a much greater area of the stage than we had believed. Unfortunately we had only strenghtened the area we thought was needed.

There was only one way to find out if this was a problem.. to ask Thomas to rehearse! And so he did.

Crack... Crack... Crack...

After a few panicked phone calls, it was clear there were two options: to somehow spend more money on Friday teatime to make the whole stage stronger, or to think about cancelling some or all of the shows. Well as a father of 2 who were due to come the next day, it was clear that upsetting around 2000 children wasn't an acceptable outcome.

Thankfully, the next phone call to Totem Timber went well, and despite the fact that they were on their way home, were able to supply what we needed. Our maintenance and technical teams worked around the clock, as they do so often, without anyone (including me) ever noticing or appreciating.

The result was that the show went on, and thankfully no children witnessed a train crash at Millbay Station this weekend.

Trains are calling at Millbay Station again!

<META content="text/html; The first is the fact that we British tend to plan and measure our “summer” around the 6 weeks of the school holidays. This means that lots of us go away at the same time, and although this helps traditional tourist attractions (like our leisure facilities, for example), it makes the job of selling tickets to a show in that period much harder than it otherwise would. For that reason, very few acts go out and tour across the summer.

So what do they do instead? Well that’s the second reason, Festivals. These have exploded in numbers and scale over the last decade, and every summer weekend has at least one major festival. Each of these will have many stages, so that everyone from breakthrough acts to the international superstars can be accommodated.

You may wonder therefore what we have been doing for the last 2 months. Well, pretty much the same. A lot of our arena related staff – and that’s everyone from Box Office to Technical to Catering to – also make the most of the opportunity of the quiet time, and have good long summer breaks. But the other thing we do, particularly me in my role, is stay on top of who’s going down well at the festivals. The show Promoters are doing this as well, scanning for the act that’s suddenly going down a storm, and might be ready for a <st1:country>UK</st1:country> tour.

I’m pleased to say that the phone has been red hot this week, and lots of deals have been done. We’ve got some great shows to bring you over the next 6 months. Most of them will be featured in our new season brochure which is at the printers and will be out in a couple of weeks (our Marketing team don’t get a quiet summer!), but there have also been some great last minute signings too, and you’ll start to hear about some of the biggies next week.

<span style='font-size:10.0pt; But in 1993, the Management team of the Theatre Royal were asked to take over what too many people were calling a "white elephant". Ever since then, Theatre Royal (Plymouth) Ltd has run The Pavs, as we affectionately call it.

Now that means that although we run the venue as businesslike as possible, believe it or not, the Plymouth Pavilions is a not for profit charity. There's no shareholders, no big conglomerate, no-one getting rich. Instead, the approach at the Pavilions benefits from the same attitudes and ambitions that the Theatre Royal as a charity has. As far as the entertainment programme is concerned, our aim is to provide the city and region with the widest possible choice of events that will, at some point, appeal to all.

Now that might sound like a normal thing to say, but unfortunately, it's not. In this modern day of commercialism, venues in towns and cities around the land are often run by private companies, and as their shareholders would expect, are run to deliver the most profit. What that means in reality is that only the shows that generate lots of money for the venue ever happen.

But a venue run as a charity with an objective of enhancing the local culture will put on events that might not make so much money (or even lose money), if it feels it's contributing to local life in some way.

To put the meat on the bones, because the Theatre Royal runs the Pavilions, we're able to bring to Plymouth Male Voice Choirs, Shaolin Monks, Brass Bands, Japanese Drummers and more.

The reason for me writing this today is that I have just come from a classical concert in The Guildhall, where Classical Brit winner and one of the finest violinists in the world, Nicola Benedetti, has just performed Vivaldi's Four Seasons alongside The European Union Chamber Orchestra.

As part of it's charitable objectives, the Pavilions organised, promoted and subsidised this concert.

It's horrible at the Pavilions right now

Several months ago I wrote about how the programme changes from year to year, depending on trends, the economy and the like. One of the areas I focussed on was how there would be less shows for children this year than last. Thomas The Tank Engine is coming in October, which I have to say is a logistical feat to fill our stage with a set including several moving trains!

Our other main childrens show is with us right now. It's Horrible Science, which is an educational TV programme for kids, as is Horrible Histories, a sister show, which I can reveal here will also be with us next February.

What's been really great about this show is the fact that I mention above, that it's educational, and full of key stage curriculum content. However, it's delivered in a very entertaining way. Because of this we've been able to encourage local schools to organise daytime trips to see the show, and on it's first day today, over 1300 schoolchildren had a fun day out just ahead of half term, and learnt about science without even realising it. It's here until Saturday, and as far as I'm aware, includes the first ever 3D show in the Pavilions!

A long time in showbiz

<META content="text/html; There are 2 things that dictate how busy we are: what is going on in the arena, and what we are planning.

On the first point, March is often one of our fullest months, and this year was no exception. Why? It just is. The same as April is one of our quietest months. There are just less shows around. In May we are in action almost everyday, although to the outside world you wouldn't know, as this in the main is work for corporate clients, rather than "shows". More about this in my next post.

So to the second point, the forward planning. As I just mentioned, the diary has peaks and troughs. The biggest peak is November and December, where we see the highest concentration of headline shows. We start looking at dates for these shows over a year in advance, and a things stand right now, there are only a handful of days across those 2 months that don't have something planned. However, right now we're not actually moving many of them further forward. That's because 8 months is a very long time in showbusiness. Before going out on the road, Comedians will want to see how well they're received on Mock The Week. Bands will want to see how their records sell before going out on the road. Or how well they go down at Glastonbury.

Last years Christmas Coup, Them Crooked Vultures, didn't get arranged until the end of August. The planning lull will last another month before the winter season starts firming up.

There's already some really special stuff in the diary which will be awesome for Plymouth this year, but with a bit of luck, I'll get some phone calls is August again too.

It's not about personal taste

<META content="text/html; They did so before their performance, and they have done after. I'm talking about Peter Andre.

I remember about 6 months ago I had a lengthy conversation with the Promoter who was wanting to send Pete out on a nationwide tour. Aside from the usual details about the show itself, we tried to judge the mood of the public. Team Pete v Team Katie and all that.

We eventually agreed that we had a show we were happy with, and we put it on sale.

At this point, let me declare that I'm neither Team Pete or Team Katie. That sort of celebrity hype is of no interest to me personally. And that sentiment runs through everything I programme for the Pavilions. It's never about personal taste.

My remit and desire is to provide a diverse range of events that over a reasonable period of time will provide something for everyone. I'd like to take this opportunity to highlight that the Pavilions, with it's charitable status and cultural objectives, is unique in being able to do this. This approach means that we can bring to Plymouth acts like the Japanese Kodo Drummers, as we did a few weeks ago. Or Treorchy Male Choir. Or Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra.
When I explained what we'd heard, she told us that some troublemaker made a rogue posting to Facebook this morning. From that the rumour grew to Twitter. And then to radio stations. Boozy antics, backstage bust ups, and smashed TV’s. Well, I’m sorry to disappoint, but there was none of it. In fact, just about the worst thing I can come up with was that the band travelled here in separate limos, so the environment isn’t top of their agenda!<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

If you were here on Monday, or have read the comments on thisisplymouth, you’ll know that it was an awesome night. Throwing back to a previous posting, it’s also great that it’s been acknowledged that although the sound system was loud, which it really needs to be for a gig like this, that the sound was perfect and you could hear every word.

The biggest worry for us ahead of the gig was that we received some intelligence that organised pickpockets had targeted this tour, had bought tickets for all of the shows, and were travelling the country conducting their crimes. Losing your wallet or your mobile on a night out can completely change your evening, and of course it doesn’t do our reputation any good either. It’s extremely rare that such a thing happens here but we couldn’t ignore the tip off, so we worked extremely hard to try and strike the right balance between taking every step possible, but without spoiling the experience for our 4000 customers.

The best way to prevent crimes like this is to deter or prevent the criminals in the first place. The Police were fantastic. On site we had a Police CCTV van, and around a dozen uniformed officers and PCSO’s. They maintained a high visibility presence around the venue, but also respected our wishes for them not to be present inside the arena, so that our customers didn’t feel intimidated. Instead, they also provided undercover officers, who were inside and on the lookout at all times. In addition, our security team of around 40 were on full alert.

We also took the rare decision to search and pat down customers on entry to the venue. We don’t do this lightly, as we don’t wish to intimidate, antagonise or scare anyone. In actual fact, the feedback that we’ve had over the last couple of days was that it had quite the opposite effect – people were happy and comforted by the fact that we took their safety so seriously. Importantly though, it worked. The evening passed without major event, and “Everybody In The Place” went home happy.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://pavilionsplymouth.blogspot.com/2010/01/backstage-at-prodigy.html' title='Backstage at...

The timing of when a show is announced is sometimes completely random, but on many occasions it is planned with meticulous detail, and involves many different organisations. With this show, the act in question haven’t released any new material for a little while, and so the first job to be done is to get them back in the public eye. To start it all off, the 1st single from their new album will be unveiled on the radio. That will be followed by the band doing a heavy schedule of promotion such as media interviews. Then the single gets released, and touch wood it does well in the charts (which it should). A week later the album will be released and hopefully the same pattern flows. At that point, when the public appetite for the band is at its highest, the tour will be announced.

Later that week there will be a “pre-sale” which is where a small allocation of tickets will be sold early to hardcore fans through the act’s official website. Then on the Friday, we’ll start selling the tickets

And it doesn’t end there. A few weeks after that the follow up single will go out. The theory being that each wave raises the hype, and helps the sales of the next.

In this case the whole process of the single’s first play on TV and radio is happening right now, and we’re scheduled to announce the show on February 1st, so make sure you check www.plymouthpavilions.com

However, what I bet you don't know is that a sizeable amount of what we do in the Pavilions Arena never makes it into the brochure. Or the website. Or into any publicity at all.

That's because as well as the entertainment events we host, the Plymouth Pavilions is the South West's leading conference and corporate destination. Organisations from all over the country (and sometimes abroad) choose to hold their events right here in Plymouth, which often go below the radar of the local community. Recent examples include a conference for the Royal College of Nursing, a prestigious media awards ceremony and a trade union congress. This year amongst others we're hosting a major Baptist Assembly.

In addition to that, we host many local corporate events. Just this week we have 2 local employers hosting their Christmas parties in the arena. But back to the national stuff we attract. The planning cycle for these types of event is often 2-3 years. It starts with us pro-actively marketing Plymouth as an exciting conference destination to the people who book these events, and after lots of conversations ultimately leads to some bookings.

This part of our business is incredibly labour intensive in comparison to sticking a comedian on a stage for a night. However, the benefits to the city of several hundred (or thousand) delegates and their families descending on Plymouth, staying in our hotels, eating in our restaurants and buying in our shops is a return that far outweighs the investment.

Plymouth is a wonderful destination, and we find time and time again that once we've demonstrated that, business will come from all over the country to the West Country.

Backstage at... The show is fronted by Gary Mullen, who since winning the Stars in Their Eyes final in 2000, has carved out an excellent live career for himself as the mighty Freddie Mercury. One of the few regrets in my life is that I never made it to a Queen concert. I did however come to One Night of Queen last time they were here, and it blew me away. His performance is so astonishing and accurate that Brian May himself has written that Gary bears a remarkable likeness to Freddie, in more than just voice and appearance on stage.

I’m unfortunately unable to come tonight, which was already a shame. However, I’ve just learnt about something special for this evening, which is leaving me feeling gutted right now:

I know from conversations with Gary how much he genuinely enjoys his performances at Plymouth Pavilions. We’re the biggest venue he plays on his tour, and the crowd are always fantastic. As a way of making it a great night tonight for those of you coming for a Christmas night out, he has added something special for one night only: he will be joined on stage by opera star Ruth Kerr, to perform a special rendition of Barcelona, the song that Mercury had a massive hit with Montserrat Caballë in 1987.

If you’re going to be here tonight, I’m extremely jealous – you’re in for a right royal treat!

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://pavilionsplymouth.blogspot.com/2009/12/backstage-at-one-night-of-queen.html' title='Backstage at... Plus with the amount of shows we have at the moment, it's a topic that has come up elsewhere on thisisplymouth. So let's talk about it: why is "the sound so bad at Plymouth Pavilions"?

The first of two points I want to make is that I don't agree with the above statement. You're probably thinking that you'd expect me to say that! Well until a year ago, before I joined the venue, I was probably one of those people that shared the view that the sound quality of the arena is rubbish. It was a view based upon the fact that we've all said it for years, and years ago, whenever I went it wasn't great.

My view today is that the arena CAN sound imperfect. And it CAN sound amazing.

So why was it historically "bad"? In essence, the shape of the room isn't great, and the finishes that were originally put into the space doubled the problem. There were loads of angles and corners for sound waves to ricochet off, which means you get unclean sound and echos all over the place. What's changed? Our technical teams have done their upmost to address this where possible. This hasn't been cheap, and has therefore been a long process. And as anything, there's more we can try. I had a conversation just last week about another investment we can make to dampen the sound from the walls, and it's something we should do, just as soon as finances allow.

To sum up the above, I guess the point is that yes the venue isn't perfect in acoustics, but we do try hard to mitigate that, and I believe we have got to a point where the sound CAN be great.

Which leads me on to my second point: why is it not consistent? I have talked before about the way in which the live arena business operates, in that I don't book the acts direct, but simply hire out the room to a "Promoter" who puts the show together, books the artist, sets the ticket price, and organises the supporting infrastructure, including the lighting, PA (sound), and the guy operating the sound. So every time you come to a gig, it's a completely different sound system, and a completely different person operating it. The speakers have probably never been in the venue before, and on one night shows there is simply no opportunity to play about with the sound and get it right. The roadie will try during the day, but that's when the huge room is empty, which in itself makes a room sound totally different. It's a problem that exists across all venues that host one night shows. We do work with the touring sound technicians to advise on the types of sound settings that work best, but we don't always get there, and they don't always listen.

Last weekend I went to Them Crooked Vultures, and Jools Holland. The first one, in my opinion could have been better sound wise. The second one, just one night later, in my opinion could not have been better sound wise. I believe that these days we get far more of the latter than we used to, and we strive to get to a point where our reputation is no longer based upon the past.

Silly Season

We're right in the middle of the busiest time of the year in the Arena. For reasons I still don't fully understand, tha majority of "Rock N Roll" tours all go out on the road for the six weeks or so before Christmas. What that means for our customers (and also for our PR), is that this is a good time of year: a great range of top flight shows to choose from. What this means for us is that our team are working on full steam. It also means that our financial model for the year is incredibly dependant upon these few weeks. For me and my fellow Directors, will we deliver on the targets that we set this time last year (before we even knew what the line up would be)?

What's fantastic about this time of year is the diverse range of work we can have in a short period of time. The versatility of the Pavilions' Arena means that it has to be a Jack Of All Trades. With that comes sacrifices, which the designers recognised. A wonderful setting like The Theatre Royal would never play host to Them Crooked Vultures. Or basketball. Or a banquet. So it's ironic that one of the things that is the Arena's biggest weaknesses is also one of it's biggest strengths.

By way of an example, here's last weeks diary:

Sunday: Lazytown - childrens theatre show
Monday: The Herald Sports Awards - gala banquet and presentation ceremony
Wednesday: Alice Cooper - Music, poison and death
Friday: Madness - 4000 people moshing
Saturday: Airwaves Plymouth Raiders
Sunday: Grumpy Old Women - Comedy with a Gin & Tonic

In my opinion, no other venue in the UK can provide such a range of shows back to back. If you're with us this season, enjoy!

PS - Talking of Them Crooked Vultures, we've been able to release a few extra tickets for this supergroup on Thursday night (by reducing the size of the stage a little). They will go very quickly, so don't say I didn't warn you...

The weekend

<META content="text/html; As I type this, it's 6.50pm on Friday evening. I'm at home.

An hour ago (so after 5.30pm on a Friday) I received an email telling me that a pop concert we've had "pencilled" in the diary for almost a year is definitely happening. Cool!

All we need to do is have our ducks in order, ready to announce the concert on Monday. Not so cool!

It won't actually go on sale on Monday, it will likely be later in the week. I haven't had that detail yet, but it's just one of many details that has to be confirmed ahead of our Marketing team sending the Press Release to The Herald and others on Monday. We need official photos of the act, their biography, date of the show (which we have), time of the show, ticket prices, details of any support act, age restrictions, whether each customer is only allowed to buy a certain amount of tickets. I could go on.

Then we need to get the official paperwork together and back to The Promoter for their sign off, plus write and proof the Press Release.

At the weekend.

Don't miss the cycle

<META content="text/html; For instance, 2009 has been a quiet year in our entertainment line up for international acts. The reason for that is quite straight forward: this time last year, as the world was in financial meltdown, the value of the Pound plummeted against the Dollar (and the Euro), which meant that it suddenly became a whole lot more expensive for Promoters to bring foreign stars in. Thankfully the exchange rate has recovered a little of late, and as such it's started to trickle back, with shows like the supergroup Them Crooked Vultures next month - heck that was a coup to be proud of!

On the flipside, this year has been huge for comedy. Again, there's an explanation: when recession bites and times get tough, it's much cheaper for Promoters to put one funny guy and his Manager on the road for a tour, than it is 2 bands (the headline & support), their instruments, the stage set, sound and light systems, a bunch of roadies, and a catering team to keep the other 30 fed. The latter requires 3 or 4 lorries and a couple of buses, the former a car.

Thankfully comedy is having somewhat of a resurgence due to TV shows like Mock The Week. Therefore the Promoters, venues like the Pavilions, and all of us as fans have found a way to get through the tough times thanks to the brilliant talent of people like Michael McIntyre.

Something else that's been big this year is children's shows. Just this year we've had Bob the Builder, Chuckle Brothers, Milkshake, The Wiggles, Scooby Doo and more. Next weekend the brilliant Lazytown is back with us. Kids shows do however seem to me right now like an area that will be less well served in 2010. These productions are planned and booked well in advance, and from the current enquiries I have, I get the feeling that the cycle is shifting here too.

Making sure your seat is actually there

Things are pretty busy in the office at the moment. We've quite a few shows going on sale at the moment, including Jimmy Carr & Britain's Got Talent Winners Diversity. One of the great things about the Pavilion's Arena is that it is versatile: we can change the way that it is laid out significantly. We have over a dozen regular formats, plus we build bespoke ones for things such as snooker tournaments and fashion shows, not to mention all the corporate and business activity we undertake, which I'll talk about another time.

So for this reason, getting each show on sale can be a military operation. We have to ensure that every detail of how the arena will be laid out is sorted before the show goes on sale. Because once you've put seats available to buy, and someone buys them, you can't take them away again. Here's just one example. Each touring show usually brings in their own equipment. Things like the sound mixing desk. The best place to control sound effectively is somewhere in front of the speakers, to hear what the audience hears, and that often means it is right down in amongst the seating.

So we need to know where they want to put the mixing desk, so that we can clear some seats away to create a space. But how many? Is the mixer 5 or 7 feet wide? 2 or 3 feet deep? Those small changes can mean the difference of 6 seats.

For some shows, our Show Co-Ordinator works on this level of detail for 6 months before we get to a point where we can put it on sale. At othe times, where an artist is suddenly in the public eye, and the Promoters want to seize the moment, we have maybe 48 hours notice.

Backstage at... Flo Rida

I've just got back from the Flo Rida gig. The best part of 4 hours of entertainment was lapped up by a buzzing crowd tonight. Local Promoter Alex did a great job of not only pulling off Flo Rida, but also crafting a perfect supporting cast, in the shape of Bashy, Sway, and local dance outfit Beat Breakers. They had a busy day, as they also squeezed in The Plymouth Christmas Lights Switch on between and earlier rehearsal and tonights show.

As I mentioned yesterday, Flo Rida flew in overnight for this gig. His flight from Los Angeles was due in to Heathrow at 1.30pm. Let's allow an hour to get through the airport, then the journey down from London is say another 3. That meant that without hiccups, our star of the night would arrive in Plymouth at 5.30pm. Just enough time for a sound check before we opened the Arena doors to his fans.

From the moment I got to my desk this morning, I have been watching Heathrow's live flight info online. Today has been a nervous day. Our acts don't usually fly in and fly out with no time to spare. So imagine my relief when his team of eight touched down 3 minutes early. We were on schedule.

And then it got wobbly. It took them around two and a half hours to get through Heathrow immigration today. At half three this afternoon the international rap star, whos fans would walk into the Pavilions arena in 3 hours time, was still sat in a London airport.

One major queue on the M5, and a night out for thousands of people would have been ruined tonight.

Thankfully the roads were clear. Flo Rida went on stage to a huge roar from the crowd, without having had chance to do a soundcheck, and without anyone in the crowd knowing how close it was to not happening tonight.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://pavilionsplymouth.blogspot.com/2009/11/backstage-at-flo-rida.html' title='Backstage at... Tonight we have US rap star Flo Rida here, and it's a perfect example of how each show is unique. For example, the majority of the big rock and pop concerts that come to Plymouth are organised by a small handful of companies, called Promoters. They are usually based in London, and can be huge organisations. Promoters are the people that pull all the bits together. They book the artist, hire the venue, organise the sound systems, the lighting, the promotion of the event, and all the logistical stuff that goes on behind the scenes, like transport, accommodation and catering. They also take the financial risk: if a show doesn't sell as well as they'd envisaged, they've still got the same bills to pay!

Those big Promoters are sometimes even more heavily involved. Some of them actually run the venues the shows tour around. Some of them also act as the artists Management. Some of them sell tickets to shows themselves. It takes an incredible amount to put a singer on a stage these days. And that's why it's incredible that Flo Rida is here today. Because tonight's show is promoted by Alex Goss, a twenty-something guy from Torpoint, who wants to make a go of it as a Promoter. We first spoke to Alex about his idea at the start of the year. At that time, it was just another enquiry, of which we get several a day. As I've outlined above, it takes an incredible amount to pull a show off, and for that reason most enquiries never get past the first phone call, as it quickly becomes clear whether or not there's any legs in it. I'll happily admit that with that backdrop in mind, I was sceptical about Alex's approach at first. But we all stuck with it, and here we are, more than 6 months later, and an international star has flown across the Atlantic overnight to play Plymouth tonight. The last time he did that was to appear on The X-Factor!

The fact that Alex is based locally has also meant that he's been able to add some unique elements to tonight's show. For instance, support comes from local dance group Beat Breakers – good luck guys – as well as DJ Jonezy, and hip hop gurus Sway and Bashy. Should be a great night.

Alex has beaten all the odds to reach this day. Hat's off to you.

There are many more reasons why tonight's gig is out of the ordinary. More about that next time..

Hello!

Hi there! I’m Gavin, and I’m the Programming & Marketing Director at Plymouth Pavilions. What that basically means is that I’m the one that books the various things that happen in the arena, and then oversees the marketing & ticket sales. It’s a really cool job in a fun industry, and my hope is that I can share some of that with you right here.

I thought it would be useful if I use this first post to tell you a little bit about me. I’m 35, married with 2 children, and live in Oreston. I’m Plymouth born & bred, and love this city. My previous career took me away from Plymouth, spending a few years in Cardiff & Ipswich, but we missed Plymouth too much, and decided to return for good. That was a year ago, and that’s when I came to work at the Pavilions.

Running an arena was a new line of work for me, so it’s been a year with a very steep learning curve: getting my head around how the industry works, booking shows, turning many more away…I’m loving every minute of it. My aim is to share as much of the interesting stuff as I can with you here, and as we’re just about to go into our busiest time of year, I’m hoping for plenty of gossip from backstage too!

Enjoy!
